Dorothy Virginia Shafer-Mathews, 87, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at the WMHS-Memorial Campus.Born Sept. 15, 1919, in LaVale, she was the daughter of the late Peter H. Wagner and Margaret Aline (Sherry) Wagner. Mrs. Shafer-Mathews was also preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth R. Shafer, 1981.A homemaker, Mrs. Shafer-Mathews was a member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church; the Cumberland Women's Civic Club; the Ladies of the Shrine; the Order of the Eastern Star Ladies; and Daughters of the Nile. An elegant woman of the 50's, Dorothy was a dedicated homemaker who mastered the art of displaying the dignity of grace in the community while balancing her family with an involved social life.Dorothy is survived by her second husband, B. Lee Mathews; her son, Gary L. Shafer and his wife, Carol; her daughter, Cheryl S. Blake and her husband, John, all of Cumberland; her sister, Margaret "Peg" Griffey, of Latta, S.C.; her grandchildren, G. Lee Shafer II, and his wife Tonya, of Fredericksburg, Va.; Mark S. Shafer and Anna V. Blake, both of Cumberland; her great-grandchildren, Steven, Ian, David, Danielle, Ryan, and Garrett; and her devoted friend and caregiver, Drenda Haines.Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m.A funeral service will be conducted at the Centre Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church an hour prior to the service.Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.The family would like to acknowledge the numerous caregivers, Margie, Kim, Gloria, and Linda, who were so dedicated to her care and love.
